The mechanics
of time
Watch movements and car engines
are united by pushing the limits of
mechanical engineering.
A connection so natural that when
we hear the phrase ‘fine mechanics’,
we might just as easily picture
a beautiful timepiece as a finely tuned car.
It’s a close-knit world as many collectors
of the one are collectors of the other.
Like, naturally enough, attracts like.

1. RICHARD MILLE RM 43-01 Ferrari. Design,
functionality, materials – Richard Mille draws
on Formula 1 at every level. It’s in the brand’s
DNA and the RM 43-01, second fruit of its col-
laboration with Ferrari, demonstrates that per-
fectly. Made from Carbon TPT®, it houses a
split-seconds tourbillon chronograph.
2. BREGUET Classique Minute Repeater 7637.
In this skeletonised white gold version, Breg-
uet reveals part of the ‘engine’ behind one of
the most refined complications in watchmak-
ing, the chime that sounds the hours, quar-
ters and minutes.
3. AUDEMARS PIGUET Royal Oak Offshore
Selfwinding Chronograph 43 mm. A mechan-
ical ‘powerhouse’ driven by the flyback calibre
4401, in a steel and ceramic case finished in the
iconic ‘Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50’, a colour now car-
ried through to this high-tech material.
4. ROLEX Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Day-
tona. The Cosmograph Daytona, a watch that’s
bound up with motor racing, appears here with
a turquoise lacquer dial and jet-black subdi-
als, all framed in a yellow gold case. It’s pow-
ered by the Calibre 4131, a movement exclu-
sive to the model.
